Cyber Security Expert Adam Levin says the crisis Americans face is huge, especially after the security breach at credit bureau Equifax.
“You have to think about the fact that every business, every government agency and, frankly, every consumer, is in the middle of a category 5 hurricane when it comes to cyber (security).”
Levin says you have to protect yourself.
“First, you minimize your risks of exposure, which means, if anyone contacts you and sounds like they are from an institution of authority, don’t believe it. Only authenticate yourself to someone if you’re in control of the conversation. That means you don’t click on links, you don’t answer phone calls where your bank asks you for your social security number. If you call them and they ask you for your social security number, that makes sense, but not the reverse.”
He says it’s important to monitor your accounts frequently and if you’re the victim of identity theft, manage the damage by getting help immediately from a professional financial organization.
